Bipolar Butterfly – Steel

Kimmy Henderson

A Gift from The Colafella Family

On one side, we try to show our best, most beautiful selves, even when we may be crumbling on the other.

Kimmy Henderson built something beautiful from scratch — a hand-painted stemware business that grew from local events to international sales. Then came her first major manic episode. The business stopped.

During that time, Kimmy created a butterfly. Looking at it afterward, she saw what she had not planned — a perfect symbol for the dual nature of bipolar disorder.

“On one side we try to show our best, most beautiful selves even when we may be crumbling on the other.”
When Kimmy shared the artwork and her diagnosis publicly, the response was overwhelming. Then she learned something that changed everything: suicide is the second leading cause of death among children in her own children’s age group.
She could not look away.

The Bipolar Butterfly became a tool — a way to reach younger generations before crisis takes hold, opening conversations that might otherwise never happen.
Art as awareness. Courage as craft. Connection as prevention.
